Moustache film competition to be held in Maine

Move over, Cannes. Maine are going to be taking part in host to its first-ever international moustache film competition, a part of its annual pageant that celebrates the bristly facial hair.

The competition set for March thirty in Portland can feature short films with storylines that involve moustaches or a main character who wears a moustache, said Nick Callanan, head of No Umbrella Media, a video production company organizing the event.

The idea for the moustache film competition, believed to be the primary of its kind, grew out of an annual moustache pageant held domestically to learn arts and cancer analysis organizations, he said.

This year's 2012 Stache Pag can feature contestants carrying all manner of moustaches, from handlebars to horseshoes, Callanan said. There are the walrus and Fu Manchu designs, he said.

"It's with reference to men expressing themselves," he said.



To be thought-about for the competition, films should be eight minutes or less and have a moustache theme or a main character with a moustache. Callanan said he has received submissions from as far as Norway.

The films are going to be screened prior the pageant, that has been held annually for 5 years at bars, bowling alleys and elsewhere, he said.

What began as a gathering of friends mushroomed into an incident that attracted some 450 folks last year, he said.

The pageant includes classes for varied forms of moustaches, as well as the Magnum, P.I., named once the amply moustachioed tv character played by actor Tom Selleck.
